The UMD1 USB/MIDI/DIN 24 adapter is a breakout board for the Teensy microprocessor that provides MIDI interface functions including working as a USB MIDI to DIN MIDI interface and a USB MIDI or DIN MIDI clock to DIN 24 clock interface. The card uses a Teensy microcontroller as its USB port and controller. Inputs and outputs on the board connect to a computer as a class-compatible USB Device and include an isolated DIN MIDI input connector, a DIN MIDI output connector and a DIN 24 clock output connector. LEDs give a visual indication of the port and clock status.
The software for the unit is open-source and can be reloaded and modified by the user. A programming development environment that utilizes the Arduino IDE with a Teensy support add-in can be used to create new functions using Arduino-like commands.
The module is available in the Synth Store as a complete kit. The Teensy board is not supplied with the kit and should be purchased separately. A demo program that provides a pass-through of MIDI sync to the DIN 24 connector and also allows USB MIDI note commands to be sent and received from the serial MIDI ports is available for download.
The adapter board is 4 inches wide, 2 inches deep and 1 inch tall. The adapter can be powered through the computer USB port or configured to use an external 5 V to 15 V power input. Provision is made in the board design for mounting in an enclosure or behind a panel.
This beginner level kit contains all the parts necessary (except for the Teensy processor) for construction including solder, and detailed, fully illustrated, assembly instructions. Users need to supply a medium-fine tipped soldering iron, long nose pliers, and diagonal cutters for assembly. There are no surface mounted parts used in this kit. A USB Micro B to USB A cable can be purchased as an optional item or supplied by the user.
The board and basic software is supported by the Teensy LC, Teensy 3.1 or Teensy 3.2 microprocessor card. The Teensy is a powerful microprocessor card containing a Freescale Cortex-M4 processor and USB communications processor on a 3/4 inch by 1 1/3 inch PC board. It has 256KB of program memory and 64KB of RAM. There is a Teensyduino add-in available for the Arduino IDE that allow sketches developed in the Arduino enviroment to be loaded into the Teensy.
